The age of your house is only the starting point

An older property is not automatically unsuitable for an air source heat pump. The more useful question is how much heat the building loses, how that heat is delivered around the rooms, and whether the existing heating system can work effectively with lower water temperatures sent around the system.

That means a stone cottage in Monmouthshire, a Victorian terrace in Newport and a renovated detached house near Chepstow may all need different solutions. The construction date matters, but it does not decide the outcome on its own.

Start with the construction of the building

A heat pump works most efficiently when the property holds on to the heat it produces. This does not mean every wall, floor and window must be upgraded before installation, but obvious heat loss can affect the size of the system and the running performance you achieve.

We look at the construction of the walls, the roof space, the floors, windows and doors. Solid stone walls behave differently from cavity walls. A suspended timber floor creates different heat loss considerations from a solid ground floor. Extensions may have better insulation than the original part of the building, creating rooms with very different requirements within the same home.

Where insulation improvements are practical, they can reduce the amount of heat the pump needs to replace. That may allow a more suitable system design and help rooms reach a comfortable temperature without relying on unnecessarily high flow temperatures. Insulation should not be treated as a reason to delay every project, however. The important point is to understand which improvements will make a meaningful difference and which are being suggested without a clear technical reason.

Radiators can be the deciding factor

Many older heating systems were designed around a gas or oil boiler that heats water to a higher temperature. An air source heat pump generally delivers heat at a lower temperature over a longer operating period. Your existing radiators may therefore need to be larger to emit the required heat.

We cannot decide this by looking at a radiator on its own. A radiator that performs adequately in one room may be undersized in another because of larger windows, external walls, a high ceiling or an uninsulated floor. Each room needs to be considered against its heat loss rather than relying on the current boiler output or the size of the existing radiator.

Some homes will need selected radiators replaced. Others may benefit from larger emitters throughout the property, underfloor heating in an extension, or a combination of both. The aim is not to remove usable equipment without reason. It is to make sure the emitters can deliver the required heat at the temperatures the heat pump is designed to provide.

The layout matters as much as the age

Older properties are often divided into smaller rooms, with thick internal walls, narrow access routes or later alterations that are not shown clearly on original plans. Those details affect both the heat-loss calculation and the practical installation.

We consider where the outdoor unit could be positioned, how pipework can reach the indoor components, and whether there is suitable space for the hot water cylinder and associated controls. A property with limited utility space may require a different arrangement from one with a large airing cupboard or dedicated equipment space.

The location of the cylinder matters because replacing a combination boiler with a heat pump can change how hot water for taps and showers is stored and delivered. If the existing home has no suitable cylinder space, that needs to be resolved as part of the design rather than discovered once work has started.

Access is another property-specific issue. A heat pump installation may involve external and internal work, so we assess how equipment and materials can reach the required areas without creating avoidable damage or disruption.

Your existing heating system provides useful evidence

The way your current system operates can help identify where the property needs attention. Rooms that already struggle to reach a comfortable temperature may point to heat escaping from the property, radiators needing adjustment, poor water flow or radiators that are too small for the room. Replacing the heat source alone would not correct every one of those issues.

We also consider the condition and layout of existing pipework, the position of the boiler, the control system and how you use different parts of the home. A house with several heating zones may need a different control arrangement from a compact property heated as one circuit.

A thorough survey should therefore result in more than a recommendation for a particular unit. It should explain how much heat the property needs, whether the radiators or underfloor heating are suitable, how the hot water cylinder would be arranged, how the controls would work and what work is needed for the system to operate properly.
